Warwick Students Union: “speakers must avoid insulting other faiths”

Edinburgh Secular Society’s  communications officer Neil Barber comments on the disgraceful decision by Warwick University Students Union to block Maryam Namazie from speaking to the Warwick Atheists, Secularists and Humanists’ Society.  The Student Union said the ex-Muslim campaigner could ‘insult’ religion.

Neil stated:  “We were shocked to hear that Warwick University’s Student Union has banned a talk by Maryam Namazie, an Iranian-born secularist and member of the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain.

Ms. Namazie is a critic of certain areas of Islam and it was feared that her talk could “incite hatred on campus”.

When did the sensibilities of religious minorities become so privileged as to trump free speech in a British University?”

More details are available from the National Secular Society website.
