ESS Letter published: First female bishop takes seat in House of Lords

Bishop 2_opt

It is apparently without any sense of irony that Right Reverend Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester has taken up an unelected seat in the House of Lords alongside other Church of England bishops in a group so-called “The Lords Spiritual.”

While of course we applaud The Church of England’s improving employment policy on sex-discrimination we must remember that only a half of Britons profess any religious belief and that The Church of England represents only a further subset of English Christians.

How can we rejoice in this overcoming of patriarchal privilege in this context of lack of representation and gross religious privilege?
