ESS Letter: Challenge to Prime Minister’s claim of ‘Christian Country’

David Cameron

David Cameron’s claim that Britain is a “successful home to people of all faiths and those of no faith” because it is a “ Christian Country” is absurd given the historical clash between religion and the enlightenment values which have played a much bigger part in building our society.

The Church has for so long been a voice of opposition to women’s and gay equality and until comparatively recently disbelief in Christianity was punishable by death or imprisonment.

In a country where only a half of all citizens believe in any sort of religion and Christians are a further subset of those, it is irresponsible, divisive and unstatesmanlike for the Prime Minister to use his Christmas message to promote his own private theological beliefs.
